As an example, there are certain gold dollars from the 1880's that are extremely hard to tell apart from Proofs. Generally speaking, many of the gold coins that are designated as Deep Mirror Prooflike by NGC command strong premiums, especially for issues that are generally seen with frosty or satiny surfaces.

In November 2005, Rick Munarriz of Motley Fool.com posed the question of which represented a better investment: a share of Google or an ounce of gold. The specific comparison between these two very different investments seems to have captured the imagination of many in the investment commuity and is serving to crystalize the broader debate. At the time of writing, a share of Google's stock and an ounce of gold were both near $700. On January 4, 2008 23:58 New York Time, it was reported that an ounce of gold outpaced the share price of Google by 30.77%, with gold closing at $859.19 per ounce and a share of Google closing at $657 on U.S. market exchanges. On January 24th 2008, the gold price broke the $900 mark per ounce for the first time. The price of gold topped $1,000 an ounce for the first time ever on March 13, 2008 amid recession fears in the United States.

Original packs from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing carry a premium, as do Star Notes which typically sell for $10 to $20 in Uncirculated condition for the common district banks. Star Notes from the Kansas City and Minneapolis district banks (I-* and J-* notes) are very scarce, and sell for more than $100 in Uncirculated condition.

Money has always been one of the most important things in society: it represented a store of value, provided news and propaganda and was an integral part of everyday commerce. Several changes have been occurred on U.S. paper money in recent years. The changes have been implemented during the redesign of denominations of U.S. Federal Reserve notes (with the exception of the $1) beginning with the $100. Several features have been added to protect our money from counterfeiting include:
1. An enlarged portrait placed off-center to accommodate a watermark visible when the note is held up to a light.
2. A polymer security thread embedded vertically in the paper. The location of the thread varies depending on the denomination.
3. Fine line printing patterns behind the back illustration.
4. Microprinting on different areas of the notes.
5. Color-shifting ink that appears black when the front is viewed at an angle.
6. A low-vision feature on the back, lower right corner for easier identification of the denomination.
7. New Federal Reserve indicators including a universal seal and a letter and number below the serial number identifying the issuing Federal Reserve Bank.
8. A unique combination of eleven numbers and letters that appear twice on the front of all notes.
